Verbo Haver: There + To Be

Algumas frases e expressões em inglês podem ser traduziadas literalmente do português, mas a maior parte do vocabulário inglês não. Em português, descrevemos coisas e pessoas com o verbo ter ou haver. Como por exemplo: "Tem um rapaz novo na cidade".

No exemplo citado acima, a melhor maneira de descrever haver é "there is".

• There is a new boy in town (Há um rapaz novo na cidade).

• There is a better way to do this (Há um jeito melhor de fazer isso.)

• There is time to finish the project (Há tempo para terminar o projeto).

Em todos os exemplos acima, podemos trocar o verbo haver por ter na tradução.

Observe abaixo as diversas maneiras em que utilizamos o There + to be.

Presente singular	There is	There is a new movie coming.
Presente plural	There are	There are new movies coming.
Passado singular	There was	​There was a problem at work, but I fixed it.
Passado plural	There were	There were many kids in the playground that day.
Futuro (singular e plural)	There will be	There will be a lecture in the company tomorrow.
Presente sing. negativo	There is not	There is not enough time to finish the test.
Presente plural negativo	There are not	There are not many trees here.

Para fazer perguntas com there is e there are, basta utilizar a seguinte estrutura.

Exemplos:

There is sugar here.

To be + there + restante da frase → Is there sugar here?

There are apples in the kitchen.

To be + there + restante da frase → Are there apples in the kitchen?

Uma outra parte importante para compreender o uso de "there + to be" é a forma negativa. Existem duas estruturas diferentes para esse caso.

Utilizamos there is no (e there are no) ao invés de there is not (ou there are not), quando um substantivo vem logo depois deles.

• There are not many trees here. → There are no trees here.

• There is not enough time. → There is no time.
