Past Perfect Progressive: Had + Been + Verb-ing

O Past perfect progressive é usado para expressar algo que começou, continuou e terminou no passado. Palavras comuns nesse tempo verbal incluem when, for e since.

  • When Friends was canceled, it had been on the air for ten seasons.

  • Thomas had been driving for 2 hours before he got into an accident.

  • When Jorge quit his job, he had been teaching in that school since 2005.

Também usamos esse tempo verbal para enfatizar a duração do evento ou ação.

Perceba que as frases contêm o past perfect progressive e o simple past na mesma frase, isso acontece porque o past perfect progressive precisa de um complemento, pois não consegue fazer sentido sozinho.
