Learning something new sometimes can be a hard process. Most people consider learning English a difficult task. Knowing the stages of language acquisition and what you must do in each stage can help you to make your path much easier.

Steve Kaufmann, a famous Canadian linguist, explained the 3 stages of language acquisition: connecting with the language, becoming comfortable with the language, and constant improvement.
Stage 1: Connecting with the language
This stage lasts an average time of 3 months length if you study at least one hour a day – listening and reading;
Take at least one class a week with a teacher or tutor;
Read as many stories as you can.
Stage 2: Becoming comfortable with the language
Practice speaking as much as you can;
Keep reading as many stories as you can;
Keep expanding your vocabulary;
This stage lasts an average time of 6 months length;
Listen to podcasts with two people talking to each other;
Consume intermediate-level material - Interesting content, anything fun!
Receive constant feedback from the tutor about words you need to improve;
Stage 3: Constant Improvement
Remember that there is no perfection;
You are sufficiently comfortable with the language;
Study what you are curious about;
Let the language come into you!;
Increase the opportunities to use what you have;
Go to the country!!! (Now you are prepared to take full advantage of being there)
Now that you know the 3 stages of language acquisition you can make your plan based on your current stage.
Good luck and have fun!
